On August 16, 1999, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire debuts on ABC. The Show is an immediate hit, with ratings soaring to 30 million viewers a night. Many memorable moments happened those first few nights, including Michael Shutterly's $500,000 win, Doug Van Gundy's dramatic $250,000 win, Tom Coletta's "I'm a fat man Regis, my heart can't take it" response, Hillary Daw's joyful $16,000 win, Doug Foster, John McClain, David Honea, and Norman Payne agonizing over their $32,000 questions, and finally, David Honea's return due to a bad question having him win $125,000.

 

Guessing Murphy Grabs $125K from WWTBAM

Either David Murphy of Quincy, Ma., is the greatest guesser in the history of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire or he was playing possum with Regis Philbin Thursday night.
Murphy admitted to pure guesses on three consecutive questions while out of Lifelines, eding with a $125,000 hunch on a question asking which ancient temple was moved to higher ground in the 1960s because of a lake created by Aswan High Dam? He gambled on Abu Simbel to win.
Murphy ended a 40-minute on-air run in the hotseat by passing at $250,000 on which general ranked last in his graduating class at West Point (Custer).
