On August 16, 1999, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire debuts on ABC. The Show is an immediate hit, with ratings soaring to 30 million viewers a night. Many memorable moments happened those first few nights, including Michael Shutterly's $500,000 win, Doug Van Gundy's dramatic $250,000 win, Tom Coletta's "I'm a fat man Regis, my heart can't take it" response, Hillary Daw's joyful $16,000 win, Doug Foster, John McClain, David Honea, and Norman Payne agonizing over their $32,000 questions, and finally, David Honea's return due to a bad question having him win $125,000.

Curt Alliaume Launches 'Save Regis' Online Campaign

Posted: 12-09-01 | News | IMPORTANT

Veteran game show historian Curt Alliaume is organizing a grass roots online campaign to save the ABC version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Regis Philbin as host.

Webmaster of Game Shows '75, an historical tribute to the peak year of game shows on network daytime television (19 until the ABC cancellation of Blankety Blanks), is encouraging viewers to e-mail both ABC audience services and to write personal letters to ABC executive Lloyd Braun, who created the holocaust of reaction when he told reporters Wednesday he "could not guarantee" Millionaire will be back next fall.
On the Save Regis page, Alliaume makes a pointed and salient comment about an unnamed ABC executive's consideration to remaking the show as a comedy format with Jon Stewart or another top comedian as host: "It’s one thing to have a comic host Family Feud (in fact, nothing but comics have hosted it), but quite different to have some standup making wisecracks when a contestant is pondering whether to risk $218,000 or more on a question.
Alliaume adds: "Only four programs ABC aired last week outpointed the Monday Millionaire (Monday Night Football, the accompanying seven-minute pregame show, NYPD Blue, and a rerun of the film "The Santa Clause" – and this during sweeps month)."- GSCC
