On August 16, 1999, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire debuts on ABC. The Show is an immediate hit, with ratings soaring to 30 million viewers a night. Many memorable moments happened those first few nights, including Michael Shutterly's $500,000 win, Doug Van Gundy's dramatic $250,000 win, Tom Coletta's "I'm a fat man Regis, my heart can't take it" response, Hillary Daw's joyful $16,000 win, Doug Foster, John McClain, David Honea, and Norman Payne agonizing over their $32,000 questions, and finally, David Honea's return due to a bad question having him win $125,000.

 

Anderson Cooper Returning to News

If by the wildest long shot, ABC's Mole 2 were to rebound in the ratings, a third version of the mystery game would not feature Anderson Cooper as host.
The former ABC newscaster----who stepped down from the network news division to become host of The Mole (ABC's top-rated series with viewers in the 18-34 bracket in 2001), has signed with CNN.
Cooper will be a regular contributor for American Mornings with Paula Zahn. He was a previous co-anchor of ABC's World News Now. Mole 2 was a dismal failure in its Friday night time slot in September and became the first adventure game to be pulled (after three episodes) before completing its run. Viewers also complained about format adjustments to create more personality conflicts (a la Survivor) and a
ABC has pledged to restart Mole 2 in the spring with a retrospective episode of the three shows which have already aired and resuming with the final 10 scheduled broadcasts. However, some ABC insiders are indicating the game may eventually be burned off in the summer.
