On August 16, 1999, Who
Wants To Be A Millionaire debuts on ABC. The Show is an immediate hit,
with ratings soaring to 30 million viewers a night. Many memorable
moments happened those first few nights, including Michael Shutterly's
$500,000 win, Doug Van Gundy's dramatic $250,000 win, Tom Coletta's "I'm
a fat man Regis, my heart can't take it" response, Hillary Daw's joyful
$16,000 win, Doug Foster, John McClain, David Honea, and Norman Payne
agonizing over their $32,000 questions, and finally, David Honea's
return due to a bad question having him win $125,000. |

ABC's 'The Chair' debuts

When
watching the chair, I said to my self, this is the show to beat the
chamber. The Chamber was like a show trying to kill someone for the
contestant to win money. The Chair has the feel and look of Who
wants to be a millionaire, but with a very tense way for contestants to
win money, and I mean really tense. The overall concept of the show is
nice to me, and host John McEnroe is also great, he needs some fine tuning
but overall great host. The set is fairly large, with lots of set lights
and a large monitor. The actual chair looks like a dentists chair witch
can be lowered under stage to pick up or drop off contestants.
The Chair puts contestants
in a chair, attached to a heart monitor, to answer questions. The catch:
if their heart rate exceeds a 'resting value' determined prior to the
show, they cannot answer any questions until they calm down -- and they
lose some of their money in the process too. A contestant plays until they
either lose all their money or miss a question.
If you missed the first
episode that aired this week, you can catch one more this week on
Friday (01-18-02) on ABC. Check tvguide.com for air times in your area.
